Joseph F. Healy, Jr., a loving husband and father, died peacefully at his home in Lynchburg, VA on February 25th. He was 84 years old. Mr. Healy had long and distinguished career in law and aviation, serving as General Counsel and senior executive for numerous U.S. Major air carriers.
Born in the Jackson Heights section of Queens, New York on August 11, 1930, he was the son of Joseph and Agnes Healy. Mr. Healy was a scholar student at Regis High School in New York City and Fordham University. After his graduation from Fordham in 1952, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following active duty service, Mr. Healy worked with the Civil Aeronautics Board form 1955 to 1959 and simultaneously received his law degree from Georgetown University, where he graduated first in his class and was a member of the law review staff.
Mr. Healy engaged in the private practice of law in Washington, D.C from 1959 to 1966; also serving as court-appointed counsel for the indigents appealing criminal conviction the U.S. Court of Appeal for the District of Columbia Circuit; served as Assistant General Counsel of the Air Transport Association of America from 1966 to 1970 and as Vice President-Legal and Corporate Secretary of Eastern Airlines until 1980.
Mr. Healy retired as Sr. Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary from Piedmont Airlines following the merger with USAir in 1989. He subsequently served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of TWA from 1993 to 1994 and was a member of the Board of Visitors of the Wake Forest University School of Law from 1988 until 1996.
He married Patricia Ann Casey in April 1953 and is survived by his wife and six children and eight grandchildren: sons J. Casey Healy of Wilton, CT, Timothy J. Healy of Kensington, MD, Kevin P. Healy of Winter Park, FL, Terence M. Healy of McLean, VA, daughters Cathleen M. Healy of Washington, D.C. and Mary K. Driskill of Lynchburg. His grandchildren are Megan K. Healy of Charlottesville, VA, Helen Casey Driskill, Elizabeth Kett Driskill, Ann Marshall Driskill, and Claire Francis Driskill of Lynchburg, Caitlin Q. Healy of Wilton, CT, Brendan A. Healy and Aidan J. Healy of McLean, VA.; his daughter-in-law Janet T. Healy of Winter Park, FL and son-in-law Robert L. Driskill, M.D. of Lynchburg; his sister Catherine Abbott and nephew William Abbot of Bowie, MD.
Services will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lynchburg on February 28th at 11:00 a.m. and Mr. Healy will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Holy Cross Catholic Church: 710 Clay St, Lynchburg, VA 24504.
