Joseph Mays Davidson, Jr. 80, of Bedford, VA, died Saturday, August 29, 2015, with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Joy Davidson for 59 years.
A life-long resident of Bedford, Joe was born on May 1st, 1935, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He attended Bedford High School and the Virginia Military Institute, and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. After his military service, Joe began his long and successful career with Piedmont Label Company. Beginning as a sales representative, his work ethic and natural abilities as a business person served him well. Ultimately, Joe was named President and Chairman of the Board, positions that he held for over 20 years. Retiring in 1997, Joe was well-known for his loyalty and dedication to Piedmont Label Company and its employees.
Golf was one of Joe’s lifelong passions and he took great pleasure in collecting memorabilia from the hundreds of courses he played. An avid traveler, he and Joy visited all 50 states and many countries abroad. The highlight though, was vacationing with his family and they recently spent cherished time together in Hilton Head, SC.
Joe’s spirit and legacy will live on through his loving family. He was the proud father of Lisa Harvel (Calvin), of Charlotte, NC; Laura Krzeski (Charlie), of Newport News, VA; and Jennifer Moelchert (Chip), of Richmond, VA. He was also blessed with 6 grandchildren: Danielle Mitchell (Stephen), Ashley Wells (Akeem), Tyler Krzeski, and Cooper, Zach, and Braden Moelchert; and 1 great-grandchild, Ryker Mitchell. He will also be missed by Molly, his faithful furry companion.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Mays Davidson, Sr. and Mildred Thomas Davidson; his sister, Mildred “Mim” Brown; and daughter, Carolyn Jo Davidson.
Widely sought after for his knowledge and expertise, Joe served as a Board member for many organizations at both the National and State levels including: Virginia Manufactures Association, Printing Industries of Virginia, Bowman Apple Products of Mt. Jackson, VA, Smyth Companies of St. Paul, MN, Master Printers of America, Printing Industries of Virginia and the Label Printing Industry of America. In the Bedford area, Joe was also proud to serve as a Board Member for local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA, the Life Saving Crew, the Dominion Bank Bedford Branch, the Industrial Management Association, the Community Health Foundation Advisory, the Industrial Development Authority, the Bedford Country Club and Bunker Hill Packing Corporation. In addition, Joe thoroughly enjoyed his memberships in the Blue Ridge Chitterling Club and the Bedford Elks Lodge #2844.
A Celebration of Joe’s life will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford, VA, on Friday, September 4, 2015, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Rick Ecklund officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Prior to the service, a private interment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery.
