Joseph John Sapyta

Joseph John Sapyta, 83, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on June 9, 2024. 

Joseph is survived by his wife, Susan Kathryn Bedel Sapyta; three children, Kathryn Susan Winkelmann (Karl), Elizabeth Jane Whiting (Jeff), and Joseph Bedel Sapyta; four grandchildren, Karley Susan Winkelmann, Alyson Elizabeth Winkelmann, Madyson Rose Whiting, and Samuel Patrick Sapyta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Sapyta and Lucille Sapyta and his brother, Charles Richard Sapyta.

Joe graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Doctorate in Nuclear Physics. He worked for the Babcock & Wilcox Companies Commercial and Government Navel Nuclear Divisions in Lynchburg, Virginia for most of his career. Joe and Susan were instrumental in founding St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Lynchburg.

Joe was a fierce Notre Dame Fighting Irish football fan. He enjoyed playing golf, reading, and spending time with his family. He was an active member at St. Thomas More Catholic Church and enjoyed being involved with various committees and ministries at the church. 

A funeral mass will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. A reception will follow mass.
