Joseph William “Bill” Gelven Jr., 77, of Lynchburg, passed away, Thursday, July 19, 2018.
Born in Springfield MO, Bill was the son of the late Joseph and Edith Gelven. Bill graduated from St. Benedict’s College in Atchison KS with a degree in Chemistry. Upon graduation Bill entered the United States Army where he served as a medic. He was an avid amateur astronomer and would give presentations on the Blue Ridge Parkway and in schools. Bill could play any instrument by ear and was a backup player for Chet Atkins. He retired from Exxon Mobil after over 30 years of service as Technical Services Manager.
Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Malone Gelven; daughters, Kathleen Raine (Dudley), and Mary Woody (Harold); son, Matthew Gelven (Michaela); sisters, Anne Rogers and Julia Turkin and five grandchildren.
A private service will be held at a later date.
