Josephine Fox Fillers Shearer

Josephine Fox Fillers Shearer, 94, of Lynchburg, died peacefully at home on Saturday, March 4, 2017.
Jo was born on August 17, 1922, in Greeneville, Tenn. the daughter of the late Carl Franklin Fillers and Sophina Tweed Fillers. She and her sister, Evelyn, moved from Greeneville to Washington D.C. during World War II, where she met the love of her life, the late Murphy L. Shearer. They enjoyed their first date at a Washington Redskins game! The happy couple were married on March 31, 1945. They raised their children, William Alan Shearer and Letty Ann Shearer in McLean, Virginia. After retirement, “Murph” and Jo moved to Lynchburg and joined Peakland United Methodist Church.
Jo was a creative woman with quilts, braided rugs, needlepoint and all manner of projects to add to her home. She was a dedicated volunteer for over three decades at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She loved Peakland United Methodist Church and faithfully helped prepare the bulletins each week for over thirty years.
She is survived by a son, William Alan Shearer and his wife, Kathy of Rockville, Md.; a daughter, Letty Ann Shearer of the home; three grandsons, Zachary Johnstone Shearer and his wife, Tiffany of Frederick, Md.; M. Trent Williams of Savannah, Ga.; and Nathan Gerald Shearer of Chevy Chase, Md.; one great-grandchild, Payton Renee Shearer of Frederick, Md.
Mrs. Shearer was preceded in death by her brothers, Luke Fillers, Hoxie Fillers, Mark Fillers and Frank Fillers and by her sisters, Goldene Burgner, Kate Neas, Evelyn Renner.
Her nieces and nephews from Greeneville and from Lynchburg were such a joy to her. There was always such laughter and tales to be told whenever all were together.
The family is indebted to two caregivers who helped keep Mrs. Shearer safe, and in her home, Karrigan Murry and Tiffany Sandidge.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at Peakland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. John Vest, officiating.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
