Josephine “Phine” Sanderson Shaeff, 95, of Lynchburg died Monday, June 24, 2019. She was the wife of the late Charles Bellford Shaeff, Jr.
Phine was born March 19, 1924, in Sedalia, a daughter of the late Clyne Noel Sanderson and Martha Cooper Watson Sanderson. She was retired from B & W and was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She rejoined her husband Buster of 70 ½ years Monday morning, as they had planned and they are enjoying the promise of our Heavenly Father and His Son in a place with many mansions.
Always having the Church as a focal part of her life, Phine was active for many years in Women’s Missionary activities, Vacation Bible School, and other “regular” activities, and also served several years as the first volunteer secretary of Calvary Baptist Church, which she helped found. Phine was also something of a pioneer, serving several terms as the first woman ordained as a deacon by Calvary. She and Buster served as long term volunteer missionaries for three years in Hungary. It is fitting that after Phine had become too frail to attend her Women’s Missionary Circle, her fellow members voted to rename the circle in her honor, a gesture she objected to but was inwardly gratified by.
She is survived by her three sons; Charles B. Shaeff, III of Lynchburg, Clyne Mason Shaeff and wife Starla of Amherst, and Glenn Cooper Shaeff of Lynchburg, three grandchildren; Gwenn Greer and husband Charley of Charleston, SC, Cooper Strawderman and husband Bryan of Forest, and Craig Shaeff of Amherst, one brother Edward Sewyn Sanderson of Lynchburg, and four great-grandchildren; Ean, Mason, and Josephine Greer, and Harlynn Hubbard.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Noel Sanderson and Harry Sanderson.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg.
A Celebration of Phine’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Louis Beckwith. Interment will follow at Sedalia Baptist Church in Big Island.
