Joyce Chafin Smith

Joyce Chafin Smith, 79, of Gretna, VA passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023. While holding hands with her sister Janice Houweling and granddaughter Harley Smith. She was from Delbarton, W.V, to the late Mason and Marie Chafin. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

In addition to her late parents, she was also preceded in death by her Brother James R. Chafin, her daughter Eva Hughes and Stepdaughter Michelle Smith

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, George W. Smith: Son, Robbie Hughes, Stepdaughter, Christina Phillips, and Stepson, Wayne Jr. Smith. Sister Janice Houweling, and her brothers, Hershel Chafin, David Chafin. Grandkids, Jamie Hughes, Harley Smith, Destiney Baker, William Phillips and George Walter Phillips, Cailee and Priscilla Smith, as well as, lots of great grandkids.

Joyce loved and cherished her family. She sure did love helping anyone and everyone. She spent all her life raising and caring for those who wasn’t hers, she treated them like they were her own; she put everyone before herself. She sure did love to cook and be with family and friends, you couldn’t keep her from being outside in her flower beds those sure were her pride a joy, as well as watching the birds; her favorite birds were hummingbirds and Cardinals. She is very loved; she will be missed; she was the glue and heart of our family.

We the family would like to also express our appreciation to the staff at Lynchburg General Hospital, Appomattmax Health and Rehab, Gretna Emergency and, Gretna Health and Rehab for taking such good care of her this past year, it sure does take a village to care for those that needed a little more than family could give, and we appreciate everyone.

The service will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
