Joyce Lee Burgess, 73, of Lynchburg, VA, died at home surrounded by her family on January 29, 2022.
Joyce was a member of Clifford Baptist Church. Joyce taught school in Campbell County at J.J. Fray Elementary and in Lynchburg at Marvin Bass and Bedford Hills Elementary for over 25 years. Joyce was born in Roanoke and grew up in Bedford where she attended Bedford Elementary School and Liberty High School. Joyce graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and received her Master’s degree from Lynchburg College.
Joyce was predeceased by her father, Harlis Lee; her mother; Eva Rader Lee; her brother, Jimmy Lee; and her son-in-law, Mike Blair. Joyce is survived by her brother, Terry Lee and his wife Barbara; Joyce’s nieces, Megan Lee and Dana Guess. Joyce was a loving Mom and “Granny”. Survivors left to cherish her memory are her husband of 51 years, Joel; her children Anne Blair of Rustburg, Joel Lee Burgess (Sarah) of Rocky Mount, Mary Terry (Danny) of Virginia Beach, Tommy Burgess (Joelle) of Purcellville and Bryan Burgess (Laura) of Glen Allen VA. Beloved grandchildren who survive Joyce, “Granny” include Karlie Terry of VA Beach, Eli and Jonah Burgess of Rocky Mount, Josh and Landon Burgess of Purcellville and Samantha and Sydney Burgess of Glen Allen. The family wants to thank Anna, Laverne, Cindy, Kathy, Paula, Tammy and all of Centra Hospice for their care of Joyce.
Her children would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to their Dad during this time. They are forever grateful for the caregiving he did for and on behalf of their Mom.
Mom faithfully believed in Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it,” and she held it steadfast as she endured many health adversities.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with the Reverend Dr. Michael Fitzgerald officiating.
