Julia Elizabeth Garbee

Julia Elizabeth Schmitt Garbee, 87, of Forest passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016.

Born January 18, 1929, in Lynchburg, Va. to the late Elwood Julius Schmitt and Hazel Reynolds Schmitt.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Clyde L. Garbee Sr.

She is survived by her children, C. Lewis Garbee Jr. and his wife Molly, Joyce G. Siddons and her husband James and Steven R. Garbee, all of Forest.  She is also survived by a sister, Peggy Shelton and her husband Harold, two brothers, Artie Schmitt and his wife Christine and James Schmitt and his wife Joan and a brother in law Keith Garbee and his wife Adreana and a sister in law Rachel Garbee.  Surviving also are two grandchildren Myra Garbee of Rustburg and Adam Garbee and his wife Kelly of Lynchburg, as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Schmitt (wife Ruth surviving) and Marshall Schmitt (wife Virginia surviving).

Julia was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother that loved her family.  In her early years she was a talented seamstress and a good cook.  She was very proud to have served with the Cub Scouts as a den mother.  Julia was a very devoted caregiver to her son Steven.

The family would like to express much gratitude to Melanie Bieri, their caregiver, for the loving care extended to them and to a niece, Ann Kostel for the many meals and visits during the past years.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, December 7, 2016, 2 p.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park, the Rev Dan Manley officiating.  Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at Tharp Funeral Home located at 220 Breezewood Dr., Lynchburg.
