June E. Johnson DeVries ,90, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died March 1, 2020. She was the wife of the late Robert E. DeVries. June was born June 21, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Simon and Svea Johnson.
She is survived by three sons: Dennis of Geneva, Illinois; Daryl and his wife Cheryl of Lynchburg, Va.; Dean and his wife Elaine of Lebanon, Indiana; and one daughter Debbie DeVries Toews and her husband Barry of Lynchburg, Va.; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters Helen Holmquist of Indiana and Lillian Carver of South Carolina and 2 great-grandbabies by miscarriage.
June met Bob at the Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago. It didn’t take long before these two were engaged. They married in 1949 and began school at Moody Bible Institute. They desired to serve the Lord together throughout their marriage. The song, “O Jesus, I Have Promised” was sung at their wedding as a vow to serve the Lord together. They kept this vow as they pastored a country church in Mentor, MN and later served at Addison Bible Church in Addison, Illinois. Dad served in many leadership roles and Mom served alongside him, teaching Sunday School, Pioneer Girls, and leading missionary and deaconess’ committees. She and Dad later served at Heritage Baptist Church as Sunday School teachers and leaders of Young at Heart. They had a heart for missions and prayed diligently for each missionary that came along their path.
June was employed by the Addison Post Office for 25 years. She then retired and she and Bob moved to Lynchburg, VA to be near their daughter and family.
Bob and June were married for almost 64 years when Bob passed away. He was the love of her life and she missed him greatly. Though she loved her family dearly, it was not the same without her beloved. She longed to be home with her Savior and be free from this life. She prayed for us diligently and had such a tender heart of compassion for each of us. We will ever be grateful for the time we had with her and the legacy she left behind, but now rejoice that she is at peace, forever rejoicing with her Lord.
