June Kalen was a graduate of what is now Carnegie-Mellon University, and went on to get her Masters of Science degree from Kansas State University in 1947. She was active in the community and was an early supporter of civil rights and the integration of her Sandusky neighborhood and the public schools. June was a member of the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church. From the mid 1960’s through the 70’s she was an active member of the Inter Faith Council of Lynchburg.

After raising her two children, June started a career in food service at McCormick foods where she worked in quality control and then in product development. She developed the first chicken burger for Burger King and went on to develop their signature onion rings and French toast sticks.

June was an individual with a thirst for knowledge in all capacities. She was an avid reader and an artist, and was known for her handmade silk screened Christmas cards.

While studying for her masters at Kansas State University, June met her husband David Kalen. They were married the next year and were together until Dave’s death in 2001. They moved to Lynchburg in 1957.

June is survived by her son, Dr. Russell W. Kalen, a prominent chiropractor and Craniosacral therapist in Northern California; and by her daughter, Kathy K. Foxx, who is the founder and CEO of Kalen Biomedical, a company which supplies materials for international cardiovascular research. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Marcus Foxx of New York City, and Iris Foxx of Montgomery Village, Maryland.
