June Mason White

d. August 30, 2018

Mrs. June Mason White, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of 30 August after a brief illness. Born October 18, 1930, she was the youngest of eight children of the late Herman and Mary Gilliland Mason. She was raised on the family farm in Charlotte County along with her brothers Thornton, Tonchie, Robert (Bob), and Roy Mason and sisters Belle Mason Francis, Effie Mason Blanks, and Esther Mason; all of whom predeceased her.

June was a graduate of Volens High School and a 1952 graduate of the Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. She enjoyed and took great pride in providing care for hundreds of patients as a nurse at Virginia Baptist until she retired from nursing.

A deeply devoted and loving wife and mother, June married Alfred White of Lynchburg, Virginia in January of 1955, forming a partnership that lasted for over 63 years. Al and June settled in the Sandusky area of Lynchburg where they diligently gave back to the community in many ways and forged many close and lasting personal relationships with friends and neighbors over the years. June is survived by three warm, wonderful, and successful children. Her eldest son, David, lives in Greensboro, NC with his wife Jeannie. June’s eldest daughter, Jennifer (Ginger) lives in Moneta, VA and her youngest daughter, Meredith White Collins, lives in Williamsburg, VA with her husband, Joe. June’s grandson, Michael White and his wife, Jeans, live in Monroe, VA and are raising June’s two beautiful great grandsons, Matthew and Daniel. June’s youngest grandson, Steven White, lives in Greensboro, NC.

June was happiest when she was helping others. It was second nature to her to look in on a neighbor who was under the weather, bake something special for a friend going through a difficult time, or sit and listen and hold the hand of a patient or friend in decline. She was effervescent and led with her heart; always lighting up at the sight of a child, always worrying over the safety and prosperity of her family, and always a moment away from laughing, playing, and teasing like a giddy schoolchild if the mood hit her. She was all class and sass; a woman who would dress impeccably but not hesitate to stick her tongue out at you just to crack you up. An amazing cook, she delighted in preparing a person’s favorite dishes or treats when they visited and would not stop serving until they were beyond full. She was graceful in entertaining those who deserved her attention and unhesitant in dismissing those who did not. She was a force of nature; an inspirational presence in the homes and hearts and souls of many people in many ways, and we can’t begin to imagine how the void left by her passing will ever be filled.

June was a longtime member of the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church and was active in supporting numerous local charities.
