Katherine Hill Vaden

March 11, 1950 — November 21, 2014

Katharine Hill Vaden, a devoted wife and mother, and talented artist, died on Friday, November 21, 2014, after suffering a stroke on March 2.

Katie was born on March 11, 1950, in Roanoke, Virginia to Emily Blake Hill and the late Ogden Halsey Hill. She graduated Randolph Macon Woman’s College in 1972, and moved to St. Paul, Minn. On December 29, 1973, Katie married F. Rogers Vaden, whom she met in St. Paul.  The couple relocated to Lynchburg in 1975.

In Lynchburg, Katie was a teacher, an award-winning artist, and an avid gardener. She was a loyal volunteer, especially committed to Riverviews Artspace, Friends of Rivermont, and Meals on Wheels. She was involved in having Rivermont Avenue designated as an Historic District, and in the ongoing downtown revitalization projects. Katie was a member of the Hillside Garden Club, the Lynchburg Art Club and the Lynchburg Historical Society, as well as an active RMWC alumna, and docent at the Maier Museum of Art.

Above all things, Katie loved the company of her family and friends. She will be well remembered for bringing a special sense of color to every aspect of life, as evidenced in her paintings, her flowers, and her “coozies.”

Katie is survived by her mother, Emily Blake Hill of Roanoke, and her husband Roger of Lynchburg. She is also survived by her children, Robert Hill Vaden and his wife, Jen, of Houston, Blake Rogers Vaden, and his wife, Amy, of Asheville, N.C., Jett Vaden Brooks and her husband, Christopher, of Poultney, Vt., and her step-son F. Rogers Vaden, Jr. and his wife, Suzanne, of Decatur, Ga.  She is also survived by five grandchildren and her brothers O. Halsey Hill, Jr. of Charlotte and Charles Blake Hill of Baltimore.

Katie was preceded in death by her beloved canine companion, “Norm”.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 23, 2014, at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Dr., Lynchburg. After a private family graveside service, a Memorial Service and reception will be held on Monday, November 24, 2014, at 11:00 AM, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 200 Boston Ave., Lynchburg.

The family expresses its deepest gratitude for the loving care shown to Katie by the very special people of Centra Neurological Intensive Care Unit, Virginia Baptist Hospital, Centra Hospice, and, especially, the Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.
