Katherine Walker Thomas Sasser, 94, was born on May 24, 1929, and died on June 26, 2023.
She was predeceased by her parents, Robert F. and Minnie Clendenen Walker, husbands George H. Thomas and Douglas Reid Sasser, and four sisters, Georgia W. Russell, Jewel W. Teffeteller, Bobbie W. King, and Sue Bell.
She is survived by daughter, Teresa Thomas Brinkley (Edwin), stepdaughters, Betty Thomas Rusher (Mike), Julia Sasser Reid (Rick), Jennifer Sasser Hairston (Felix), and stepson Douglas Reid Sasser, Jr. (Deena), grandchildren Patrick Brinkley, Annie Brinkley Hallmark (Kevin), Elizabeth Farrell, Catherine Lawrence, and great grandchildren, Haydee, Jesse, Tessa, and Lucie Hallmark, Tyler Howard, Julianne and Abbi Farrell.
She earned her A.A. degree from Young Harris College, B.S., M.S., and Ed.S. degrees from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) and retired after a thirty-year teaching career in the Knoxville City School system.
She was a long-time member of Centenary United Methodist Church and over the years, served in many areas including Sanctuary Choir, Handbell Choir, Sunday School teacher, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. She was also a member of The Woman’s Club of Lynchburg.
A memorial service will be held at Centenary U.M.C. on July 8 at 11:00 a.m., conducted by Rev. Michelle Kim and Rev. Ben Horrocks.
