Kathleen Costello Carson

Kathleen Costello Carson, 93, of Amherst, formerly of Lynchburg, passed away February 6, 2012. She was the wife of the late Milton Dillard Carson.

Kathleen was born July 6, 1918 in the small village of \"Killawalla\" near Westport, Ireland. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Costello and Julia Burke Costello. At the age of 17, Kathleen and her cousin Bridie Deese left their homes and ventured to the United States.

Mrs. Carson was of the Catholic faith and had twenty-seven years of service in the cafeteria at GE before her retirement.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers; Mike and Martin Costello, three sisters; Eileen Spelman, Mary McCormick, and Bridie Kenny.

She is survived by two sons; Milton D. Carson, Jr. and Wanda of Madison Heights, Norman \"Butch\" Carson of Amherst, a daughter; Gail Smith and Charles of Rustburg; three grandchildren, Milton D. Carson III and Tracey of Madison Heights, Angela R. Ferguson and Donald of Bedford, and Travis C. Smith of Rustburg; step-granddaughter, Sharon Payne of Conway, SC; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Austin Ferguson and Kaitlyn Ashley Ferguson; a brother, James Costello; and a sister, Julia Heneghan, both of Westport, Ireland; a brother-in-law, Franklin D. Carson and Grace of Lynchburg; and sisters-in-law, Selene Stewart and Tom of Lynchburg, and Gail Hensley and Wallace of Lynch Station.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held, 10:00 AM, Friday, February 10, 2012, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Pastor Daniel Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends, Thursday, February 9, 2012, 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Madison Heights, 929-0055.
