Kathleen Melton Sihlanick

Kathleen Melton Sihlanick, 92, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, April 3, 2010.

She was the wife of the late Mike Sihlanick \"" a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. Captain Sihlanick died July 4, 1988.

Kathleen was the youngest of nine children of Martin Fisher Melton and Sarah Rosella Mitchell Melton \"" both deceased. Also, all of her eight siblings have been deceased for years.

She is survived by her son Mark Michael Sihlanick, her daughter-in-law, Susan Fauber Sihlanick and two grandchildren, Kirsten Leigh Sihlanick of Alexandria, VA, and Kevin Andrew Sihlanick of Cambridge, MA. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews to whom she was close, including her nephew and traveling companion, Larry Longstreet.

Kathleen was raised on a farm in Southwest Missouri, but after her marriage in 1940, lived in Joplin, MO; San Diego, CA; Quantico, VA; Dodge City, KS; White Plains, NY, and last \"" Lynchburg, VA. Her home base was Joplin, MO.

She had many friends and relatives \"" some dating back to childhood days. A few are left, but many have preceded her in death.

She worked in many fields \"" mainly medical and purchasing. At her retirement in 1980 she was a buyer for General Foods Corp in White Plains, NY. As a buyer she traveled extensively, working with numerous top line companies and executives as well as Headquarters USMC in Washington, DC.

In 1989 Kathleen started a weekly TV program called \"Life After 50\", which she researched, wrote, produced, and hosted. That ended in 2008 when the studio closed.

She had a God-given gift of words and a few years ago published her book, \"A Kaleidoscope of Life.\" She was a frequent speaker locally and was also the speaker at her husband\"™s yearly USMC officer reunions.

Kathleen was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for a number of years and at her death was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.

Her family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 5, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home by Reverend John Thompson. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park

Kathleen has requested that any memorials in her memory be made to Freedom Baptist Church, 1595 Turkey Foot Road, Lynchburg, Virginia 24502 or the charity of your choice.
