Kathryn Beasley McKenna, 94, died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 27, 2016. She was the wife of the late Wallace Glass McKenna.
Mrs. McKenna was born on September 2, 1922, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the eldest daughter of Walter Calvin Beasley and Kathryn Harms Beasley Lewis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Virginia Beasley McVeigh.
Kakkie, as she was known to her friends, was educated in the Lynchburg Public Schools and graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1944. She especially cherished the friendships formed with a group of her Randolph-Macon classmates, fondly known as the “Good Group”. She was a lifetime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she served as the president of the Women of the Church and was the long-time chairwoman of the committee charged with baking the famed St. John’s Boston Cream Pies. She was an active and sustaining member of the Junior League of Lynchburg and was a past member of the Lynchburg Garden Club. For many years, she was a faithful member of a group of drivers who transported blind citizens to a weekly meeting.
For 66 years, Kakkie lived on Woodridge Place. The friendships and bonds that she formed with several generations of her neighbors were a source of great joy and support.
She is survived by her three sons, Wallace Glass McKenna, Jr. and his wife, Anne of Lynchburg, Va., John Harms McKenna and his wife, Vickie of Lake Wylie, S.C., and Robert Walter McKenna of Las Vegas, Nev. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kathryn Clark McKenna and her husband, Michael Branch, John Harms McKenna, Jr., and Charles Spencer McKenna; and her great-grandchildren, Robert deFillipis Branch and Elizabeth Beasley Branch.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Michael Will and the staff of Westminster Canterbury’s Senior Independence for their loving and attentive care.
Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2016, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the home of Anne and Sandy McKenna, 3320 Woodridge Place.
