Kenny Kemp

October 22, 1965 — May 12, 2015

Kenny Kemp passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at home with his family after a brave battle with cancer.

Kenneth Taylor Kemp was born on October 22, 1965 in Jacksonville, Florida, the youngest of four children to Douglas and Jo Lynn Kemp. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg in 1983. He went on to study forestry at Virginia Tech, becoming a lifelong Hokie fan in the process.

Kenny worked as a surveyor for many years at Hurt & Proffitt in Lynchburg, where he made countless cherished friends. He was the cheerful leader of their Relay for Life team, helping raise money for cancer research. In the two and a half years that Kenny spent battling cancer, Hurt & Proffitt loyally supported him.

He was devoted to his family and friends. Kenny loved spending time on the water, whether it was at the beach in the Outer Banks or in a canoe on the river. He took great pride in his home, always ready to host family and friends, and always making time on Saturdays for the Hokies.

Kenny’s compassion for animals in need was unsurpassed. He adopted and lovingly cared for several dogs throughout his life, including Marley and Max, who will surely miss him.

Kenny is survived by his brother, Ricky (Donna) of Farmville, NC; his sister Kim (Matt) Austin of Tallahassee, FL; his nieces, Lee Ann Houston, Lynn Beal, Elizabeth Carraway, Sibyl Kemp, and Sara Kemp; and his nephews, Craig Hudson, Billy Shynak, and Matthew Shynak. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Douglas and Jo Lynn Kemp; his sister, Lynn (Jimmy) Houston; his maternal grandparents, Herbert and Sibyl Kemp of Farmville, NC; and his paternal grandparents, Frank and Pat Taylor of McCaysville, GA.

Memorial services will be held at 1PM on Friday, May 15, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with Rev. Tony Reeves officiating.
