Kirby Spencer Crews, 83, of Lynchburg, VA, died Friday, November 04, 2011. He was the husband of the late Annabelle Lee Smith Crews.

Born Friday, November 25, 1927 in Buckingham County, VA, Kirby was a son of the late Gilbert Crews and Thelma Watson Crews.

Kirby is survived by two sons; Kirby Spencer Crews, Jr. and his wife, Lucy, of Staunton, VA, and Tommy Crews, of Waynesboro, VA, a step-daughter; Christine Grubbs and her husband, Owen, of Lynchburg, a step-son; Keith Barker and his wife, Nancy, of Brookeville, MD, eight grandchildren; Jennifer Edmonds and her husband, William, of Lynchburg, Matthew Yates and his wife, Angie, Roanoke, VA, Robert Barker and his wife, Claudia, of Norfolk, VA, Amy Miller and her husband, Brian, of Bridgewater, VA, Blair Ford and her husband, Jeff, of Evington, VA, Nicole Smit and her husband, Brian, of Ansbach, Germany, Colleen Burr and her husband, Joe, Annapolis, MD, and John Barker, Washington, DC, nine great grandchildren; Noah Ford, Jacob Yates, Kimberly Barker, Anna Smit, Benjamin Yates, Hunter Miller, Isaac Miller, Marissa Miller, and Ava Miller, and one brother; Edison Crews and his wife, Louise, of Keysville, VA.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Kirby was preceded in death a step-daughter – Kathy Yates, a brother; Ernest Crews, and a sister; Edith Meeks.

Kirby grew up working on the family farm. Joining the US Army, working with the military police he was stationed in Germany and served a tour of duty in the Korean Conflict. Returning to Lynchburg worked as a beat cop in Lynchburg and later raised and sold chickens for Holly Farms. Kirby retired from B & W as Captain of third shift security. In his retirement Kirby loved wood working and spending time with his grandchildren and family.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, November 06, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A Graveside Service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 07, 2011 at Virginia Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Tom Bryant officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bedford Memorial Hospital, Bedford County Nursing Home and Heritage Green for the loving care given to Kirby while he was in their care.
