Kyle Haskin Cyrus (91) of Lynchburg went to be with his Lord, March 23, 2019. He was born April 7, 1927 in Lynchburg to the late Claude Percy Cyrus and the late Estelle Dudley Cyrus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Whitten Cyrus, and his brother and sister-in-law, Claude Thomas Cyrus and Jean Webber Cyrus. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Stephen and Bainy Cyrus of Norfolk, Va. and Kenneth and Mary Kay Cyrus of Tampa, Fl.
A proud American, he left High School early to join the Navy in WWII and served as a First Class Gunnery Mate on the USS Tarawa. With his 20 years of experience as a butcher, he worked his way through the ranks at the Virginia State Department of Agriculture and retired after 21 years as a Regional Supervisor.
Kyle was an active member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist in Lynchburg for 50 years involved with the youth groups and United Methodist Men’s group. An avid camper, he also volunteered with the youth group at Camp Alta Mons. He and the family traveled in almost every state.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Mackey Lodge #69 AF & AM.
Even though his choice of cuisine was definitely different from hers, Julia Child nailed it “People who love to eat are always the best people”. Kyle was the best. A loving husband for 68 years and a great dad, his dry wit and laissez faire rearing would lead him to tell the boys “. . . do the right thing, be careful and don’t tell you mother . . .”
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, April 12, 2019 at Fort Hill Memorial Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia by Rev. Gary Heaton and Rev. Elizabeth Ecklund. A reception will be held after the service at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. If you are unable to attend the graveside service, the family welcomes you to attend the reception.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gleaning For the World, P.O. Box 645, Concord, Virginia 24538 or Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, (434) 237-9424.
