Lamont Cordell Hughes

LaMont Cordell Hughes departed his earthly home on Thursday, September 9, 2021.

He was born on February 17, 1978, to Larry Carnell Hughes Sr. and the late Cherry Billups Hughes who often said he favored in spirit and stature. LaMont was a devoted son, brother, and friend, but his most cherished relationship was that of being a father. His daughter, Anisa, was his pride and joy.

Growing up, LaMont excelled in basketball and was a standout player at EC Glass High School. He was also a playground legend. He could soar through the air effortlessly and his jumper was smooth as silk. One of LaMont’s proudest achievements was when he had the opportunity to play for the Nova Hawks in the American Professional Basketball League for a short stint in 2009. LaMont was an avid fan of the now Washington Football Team and most Sundays in the fall and early winter were spent cheering them on tv or with friends at game watch parties.

He held many jobs over his professional career, but he truly enjoyed working with his hands in the technology fields. Some of LaMont’s most loved professional work happened during his tenure at Ericsson. He held several positions as a RBS technician and repair technician. Not only did he enjoy the work but lived for the camaraderie and relationships that he developed in his time there. LaMont worked for Fairfax County’s SACC (school aged childcare) program as a teacher in the early 2000’s. Finally, after years of waiting, he was able to achieve his dream job of becoming a mailman with the USPS in 2004. His last position was with Lockheed Martin in Manassas, Va. as an IPC Specialist.

LaMont was a huge lover of music. He enjoyed all genres so long as they were good vibes. Mont, L-Boogie, L-Bleezy, L-Train, L-Dawg, or just L, as he was also referred to, was always down to enter a freestyle cypher with his friends and let the instrumental rhythms take him on a journey.

Most people would describe LaMont as “cool, gentle, loving and kind.” His infectious personality always made people feel comfortable around him. He was laid back and rarely ever rattled. He was someone who everyone wanted to be around.

LaMont had a deep faith and relationship with Jesus Christ which was apparent by the way he lived his life and the example he set for others. He gave his life to Christ and was baptized at Jackson Street United Methodist Church.

LaMont was preceded in death by his mother Cherry Billups Hughes, grandmother Betty “Tee” Bennett, uncle Charles Billups and uncle Gary Bryan.

Those who are left to cherish his memory are his father, Larry Hughes Sr.; daughter, Anisa Hughes of Lynchburg, Va.; two brothers, Larry Hughes Jr (Takia) of Reidsville, N.C., and Michael Everett II (Charmagne) of Woodbridge, Va.; four aunts, Susan Evans (Dave) of Rustburg, Va., Rochelle Billups his godmother, of Stevensville, Md., Sharon Bryan of Grasonville, Md. and Bernadette Christian of Lynchburg, Va.; one uncle, George Saunders of Lynchburg, Va.; grandparents, Jolly and Hubert Phillips of Stevensville, Md.; two nephews and two nieces, Jarius Wilson-Hughes of Reidsville, N.C. Ma’Khye Everett of Fredericksburg, Va., Sarai Everett of Fredericksburg, Va., and Jaliyn Scott of Woodbridge, Va.; and a host of loving cousins and friends who turned family.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Jackson Street UMC Church, 901 Jackson Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504 with the Rev. Chandler Reason officiating, and the Rev. B. Alvin Scott as eulogist. Masks will be required for all in attendance.

The family would like to express gratitude for the prayers, condolences, words of encouragement and acts of kindness during this very difficult time. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will not be a repast.
