Larry Phillip Lawhorne, 69, of Lynchburg, died on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving husband of Candace Theurer Lawhorne for 38 years.
Born Sunday, September 20, 1942 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Carl Lawhorne and the late Katherine Currier Lawhorne Davis.
Being a native of Lynchburg, Larry graduated from EC Glass in 1963. He attended Lynchburg College, where he received a B.S. in Biology in 1969 and an MEd in 1973. His undergraduate education was interrupted by his enlistment in the Air Force, where he served in the Vietnam War.
He began his professional career as a high school teacher at Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Virginia. He then entered the tire business, which took him and his family to Kansas City, Kansas, and Dallas, Texas, and eventually back to Lynchburg. Larry then worked for the Lane Furniture Company for more than a decade, followed by one last brief stint in the tire business before his retirement.
He enjoyed reading, photography, drawing, painting, officiating soccer, watching old movies, dancing, playing racquetball and tennis, but his favorite pastime was spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife Candy, Larry is survived by his two sons, John Damon Lawhorne of Lynchburg, and Andrew Phillip Lawhorne, of Grapeview, WA.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Maryann Trent and Carol Rowe.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6:00 PM. Friday, July 13, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one half hour before and following the service at the funeral home.
