Laura E. Heckman

Laura Heckman, 83, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2016, in Forest, VA. Laura Elizabeth Etter was born to Andrew and Ruth Etter on June 21, 1932, in Shippensburg, PA. She married John Heckman on June 23, 1951 in Chambersburg PA. The majority of their lives was spent serving others in Lynchburg by way of Sew Simple, Inc. and Thomas Road Baptist Church. They were also active Gideons.  She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years and many family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ed, John, Emory and Lester; and four sisters, Margaret, Dorothy, Janet and Mary. She is survived by a sister, Rhoda Eckman and numerous nieces and nephews. Laura was an active member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and part of the Gideons. Throughout her life, she shared the story of God’s love and mercy, through Sew Simple, the local church bus ministry and AWANA programs. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, seamstress, cook, hostess, friend and business owner.

A celebration of Laura’s life will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Thomas Road Baptist Church Pate Chapel. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the service from 5 to 6 p.m.
