Lawrence (Jeff) E. Jefferson, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on August 30, 2024. Preceded in death by his loving parents, James E. Jefferson and Dorothy S. Jefferson, Jeff leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Born and raised in Lynchburg, VA, Jeff was known for his vibrant personality and his deep love for his family. He was the devoted father of five children: Tisha Jefferson of Raleigh, NC; Tamika Harris (David) of Winter Garden, FL; Tina McAlexander (Darrin) of Lynchburg, VA; Tony Jefferson (Heather) of Charlotte, NC; and Marcus Mayo (Devon) of Baltimore, MD. His heart swelled with pride for his nine grandchildren: David Harris, Dawson Harris, D'Andre Jefferson, Rachelle Jefferson, Isaiah McAlexander, London Jefferson, Lennox Jefferson, Hayden Mayo, and Griffin Mayo, as well as his one great-grandchild, D'Andre Jefferson, Jr.
Jeff is also survived by his dear siblings, Bruce Jefferson (Carol) and Glenda Jeffress, who shared in his life's joys and challenges. His many nieces, nephews, and countless friends, especially his beloved friend Linda Winfree, will remember him for the laughter and companionship he brought to every gathering.
An avid lover of music and a regular at concerts, Jeff had a deep appreciation for the joy that rhythm and melody brought into his life. He was also passionate about playing cards, particularly bid whist and spades, where he often showcased his competitive spirit and sharp mind. Golf was another of his favorite pastimes, allowing him to enjoy the tranquility of the greens while engaging in friendly competition.
He was an avid sports fan and high school athlete. In 1966, he helped the Dunbar Poet’s basketball team win the VA State championship for the first time since 1938. Jeff was called the “Man with the Golden Hands” due to the number of steals.
However, above all else, Jeff valued the time spent with his family and friends. He was a man who knew the value of love, loyalty, and laughter. His legacy is one of kindness, strength, and the bonds of family that he nurtured throughout his life. Whether it was a lively card game, a shared meal, or simply a good conversation, Jeff knew how to make those around him feel loved and valued.
Jeff will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his parents and resting in eternal peace. As we remember Jeff, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who touched so many lives with his kindness, joy, and unwavering love for his family.
