Layard Thomas “LT” Fortune, Jr. died in Lynchburg General Hospital on Wednesday, December, 30th, 2015. LT was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on May 10, 1937, the son of Layard Thomas Fortune, Sr. and Elaine Hill Fortune. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Anita Fortune Murdock, and his blue-eyed hound dog “Buddy”.
LT is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gloria Hendrick Fortune, daughter Courtney Fortune Brooks and her husband G.W Brooks, and sisters-in –law Donna Creasy, and Rebecca Sarver and their families. He loved and was greatly loved by his immediate family, his extended family of in –laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews living locally and in other parts of the Country.
LT was a graduate of EC Glass High School, and attended CVCC. A Veteran, LT served honorable in the United States Air Force. LT worked for the Lynchburg Fire Department, before starting a 20+ year career at Mead Corporation which is now Rock Tenn.
LT was a man of many talents. He was a ham radio operator, W4LTF, and was a member of the local ham radio club. LT and Gloria took many road trips so that LT could carry out his passion for “county hunting”. Gloria drove and LT would contact other ham radio operators in the counties across the Country. At 9am each morning LT took part in the ROC Network (Retired Old Coots Network). One of his greatest pleasures was talking with his ham radio friends locally and also in Countries around the world.
LT loved gardening. His heirloom tomato plants flourished in raised beds that he built in the back yard. He was a home gardener and became a Master Gardener and member of the Hill City Master Gardener’s Club. As his health declined he became a friend of the Hill City Masters Gardeners.
LT was also an avid bridge player. He learned the game as a youngster and continued to play for many years locally and in regional tournaments.
The Outer Banks of North Carolina and Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia were two of LT’s favorite places for many years. Summers and Fall were often spent between the two areas. When his daughter Courtney was a young child, LT taught her to fish on Kitty Hawk pier in Kitty Hawk, NC.
The family would like to thank 5 East Pulmonary, STICU, and all the physicians who cared for LT, for their excellent care during his hospitalization.
LT, Gloria, and Courtney, especially wish to thank Mr. Donald Madison and his family for their love, support, and care given to LT during his illness. We could not have made this journey without their help.
