Lelia O\"™Neil Scott Yates, 83, of Bedford, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 in Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born November 1, 1926 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Bessie Arthur Scott and William Jessie Scott.

 Lelia was a member of Bedford Baptist Church, the Women\"™s Missionary Union and Senior Choir.

 In addition to her parents, Lelia was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Carel Yates; a sister, Juanita Scott; and two brothers, Page Scott and Harry Scott. She is survived by two loving daughters, Vicky Y. Elliott and her husband, Dean of Roanoke and Linda Y. Harper and her husband, Lloyd of Goode; two grandchildren, John S. Elliott of Charlottesville and Elizabeth Harper of Lynchburg; three sisters, Francis Wheeler and Marion Saunders both of Bedford and Charlotte Smith and her husband, Mike of Lynchburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Oakwood Manor and her Bedford Baptist Church family for their caring and kindness during Lelia\"™s illness.

 Memorial contributions may be made to Bedford Life Saving Crew, PO Box 161, Bedford, VA 24523 and Bedford Baptist Church Building Fund, 1516 Oakwood St., Bedford, VA 24523.

 A celebration of Lelia\"™s life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Bedford Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM, Friday, January 22, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443.
