Lenore Pearson Scoville

d. September 1, 2018

Lenore Katherine Pearson “Kitty” Scoville, 88, of Lynchburg, Va., died Saturday, September 1, 2018. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Charles Scoville.

Kitty was born in Lynchburg on May 1, 1930 to the late Herbert Pennick Pearson and Mary Elizabeth Burnette Pearson.

She became the matriarch of her generation, as the surviving sibling of five brothers (Herbert Pennick, Jr., Julian Alfred, Richard Clay, Lacey Allan, and Christopher William Pearson) and the seventh of seven sisters (Edith Pauline, Lucille Christine, Mary Elizabeth, Thelma Alice, Louise Madeline, and Nancy Jane Pearson). She was thoroughly devoted to her family.

Kitty is survived by her children, Linda Katherine Scoville and Joseph Charles Scoville, Jr. and wife, Patricia Lynn Scoville. She was blessed with grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Scoville Whistlehunt and husband Dustin, and Cameron Joseph Scoville.  She was further blessed with a beautiful great-grandson, Joseph Holt Whistlehunt.

Kitty enjoyed painting and reading, especially history and biographies, and was particularly fascinated by the life stories of theologians Dr. Albert Schweitzer and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. She concentrated heavily on Bible study, and had read the Bible eight times, cover to cover, and was in the process of completing a ninth reading.

She was raised Presbyterian and became a member of Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1967, where she remained active.

Kitty was also interested in family history and enjoyed membership in several organizations. She was a past member of the Bedford Genealogical Society and an active member of the Virginia Branch of the Huguenot Society Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia, as a direct descendent of Dr. Pierre Chastain (1659-1728) and wife Susanne Reynaud.

She was a proud member of the Peaks of Otter Chapter of the National Society-Daughters of the American Revolution and the Gen. William R. Terry Chapter #580 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Bedford, Virginia.

The family will hold visitation on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of Kitty’s life will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Memorial Christian Church, 615 Perrymont Avenue, Lynchburg, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. J.
