Leslie Cabell Hurt

August 25, 1920 — February 25, 2016

Leslie Cabell Hurt passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at his home in Appomattox.

He was born in Drakes Branch, Virginia and was a 1941 graduate of VPI, and later received a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maryland. He spent thirty-eight years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-first with the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation, but mostly with the Foreign Agricultural Service.

Mr. Hurt was in the military service for four years during World War II- serving in Panama and the European Theater with the 63rd Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. His regiment was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre for action in the Colmar Pocket Campaign. He spent 23 years in the military service (including active, National Guard and Reserves) and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Mr. Hurt was a Past Commander and Life member of Wheaton American Legion Post 268, and served as a Captain of the Color Guard for 35 years. He also was a Life member of the 40 & 8 and Past Commander of the Military Order of the World Wars. He served eight years as President of his Homeowners Association at Leisure World in Silver Spring, and was Chairman of the Community Council there for two years.

Mr. Hurt is survived by a son, Robert L. Hurt, of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Gayle Rosenblatt, of Appomattox, Virginia; 6 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Leslie’s Life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 29, 2016 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. The family will receive friends immediately following the service for a reception at the funeral home. Interment will be at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville, Maryland, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 with military honors provided by American Legion Post# 268.
