Leslie Preston Carter, 81 of Madison Heights, died on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at his home. He was the husband of Shirley Sorrels Carter for 56 years.
Born Friday, December 6, 1929, in Lynchburg, Les was a son of the late James Harry Carter and the late Nannie McCullough Carter.
In addition to his parents, Les was predeceased by son, Michael Bryan Carter; and four brothers: Marshall, Bill, Erskine, and Carl Carter; and a sister Ruby Hall.
In addition to his wife, Les is survived by, two daughters: Debbie Ramsey and her husband, Pete of Amherst, and Melissa Carter of Madison Heights; a brother Bruce Carter and his wife, Pat of Rustburg; a sister Lois Kessler and her husband, Kenneth, of Lynchburg; a sister in-law June Carter of Lynchburg, eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, a brother in-law Preston Sorrels, of Lynchburg; a sister in-law Betty Powell and her husband, Pete, of Lynchburg, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Les was a good Christian man who lived an exemplary life. He was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church and attended Amazing Grace Ministries. He proudly served our country as a member of the US Navy, during the Korean Conflict. He loved to hunt and fish and was a member of Brightwell Mill Hunt Club. One of his favorite things in life was watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events. He always had a smile on his face and will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, November 21, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Oakdale Baptist with Pastor Bill Evans and Pastor Terry Wornstaff officiating. Interment will be in Meade Cemetery, Madison Heights, VA. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16.
