Lewis Ashby “Bud” Clowdis, Jr.
October 13, 1928 — July 16, 2022
Lewis Ashby “Bud” Clowdis, Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on July 16, 2022.
Bud was born on October 13, 1928, to Margaret Kavanaugh and Lewis Ashby Clowdis, Sr.
He graduated from Brookville High School and married his high school sweetheart, Margaret “Kitty” Catherine Wooldridge. They were married for 73 years.
He had many stories to tell about working at Preston Glen Airport after school, Charlie’s ESSO Station, and his 34-year career at General Electric.
Bud always seemed to enjoy working and giving his time to others. Whether it was building his Smith Mountain Lake house with his childhood friend, the late Jim Puckett, or the countless hours he spent volunteering his time to Brookville, he took great enjoyment in contributing to the community, and his family. It’s hard to think about Bud without memories of the lake or Brookville. He loved entertaining kids and family at Smith Mountain, and for a span of over forty years you could not attend a Brookville football game without seeing him working on the “chain gang” or working the concession stand, selling tickets, or helping with whatever needed to be done for numerous sporting events.
Bud also liked to have fun. Throughout his life he fished, bowled, enjoyed a lifetime on the golf course, and even played volleyball as a younger man. After retirement, he was quick with a joke to make you smile, a Tootsie Roll to keep you from being hungry and after moving to Bentley Commons, he was known as the “candy man” always giving out Werther’s Originals. He especially loved time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will all remember Bud with a smile on his face.
In addition to Kitty and his parents, Bud was pre-deceased by his son, Lewis Ashby Clowdis III; his sister, Rebecca Clowdis Haas Wray; and his son-in-law, James R. Whorley.
He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Clowdis Whorley; grandson, Edwin Sidney Martin III and wife, Cathy; step-grandson James Vincent Whorley and wife Julie; and six great-grandchildren, Win, Anna Catherine, and Nancy Martin, and Carolanne, Lydia, and Ashby Whorley.
A celebration of Bud’s life will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. in the shade of the Cedar of Lebanon Tree where he collected many many pinecones for family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bentley Commons and his and Kitty’s longtime caregiver, Vicky Gilbert. James River Home Health & Hospice provided excellent care and services to Bud.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Brookville Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department, the Campbell County Rescue Squad, or Brookville High School (Athletics Dept. in the memo.)
