Lillie Gibson Spain, 78, of Lynchburg, died Friday, June 10, 2016. She was the wife of Simmons Stephen Spain, Sr. for 53 years.
Lillie was born in Pekin, N.C. on September 11, 1937 to the late Will James Gibson and the late Della Mae Chamberlain Gibson. At a young age, her family relocated to Georgetown, S.C., which became her hometown. Lillie proudly graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. in 1960. Lillie moved to Belmont N.C. where she perused a career as a grade school teacher and became the owner of The Evergreens Restaurant. In 1969 she continued her career as an English teacher at Brookville High School in Lynchburg, from which she retired in the mid-nineties.
Along with her husband, Lillie is survived by three sons, Simmons S. Spain, Jr. of Forest, Kenneth Byron Spain and his wife, Nikki, of Burke, Va., and Cary Downing Spain and his wife, Michelle, of Forest; two granddaughters, Susan Chai Spain and Gabriella Downing Spain; and two sisters, Kathy Molony of Charleston, S.C., and Lee O’Connell of Chicago, IL.
The family will receive friends today, Sunday, June 12, 2016 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 1 p.m. in Virginia Memorial Park.
