Linda Johnson Porter

June 16, 1948 — March 20, 2017

Linda Johnson Porter, 68, of Lynchburg, died Monday, March 20, 2017. She was the loving wife of Randy Rhodes for over 30 years.

Linda was born June 16, 1948 in Wilmington, North Carolina the daughter of the late John Alexander Johnson, Sr. and Elizabeth White Johnson. She loved the coast and spent her childhood shrimping, fishing, and shelling with her parents to supply her family’s seafood shop. She pursued a career as a hairdresser after high school and beauty school.  Her love of children and art then led her to become a teacher’s assistant and art teacher. In later years, she opened a hand painted furniture and crafts store in Southport, NC.

She moved to Lynchburg after her first grandson was born and never ever missed a step that her grandchildren took.  She was a member at Centenary United Methodist Church heavily involved with the children, youth, JIFF programs, and all family programs. She loved baseball and watching Lynchburg Little League games where you never doubted which kids were her grandchildren. She was known throughout the community for her cooking skills, her resilience, her friendship, her fierce love for her family, and her inability to say “No” to her grandchildren.

In addition to her significant other, she is survived by her daughter Angela P. Campbell and her husband Tim of Lynchburg; and her grandchildren and best friends: Kane, Cooper and Callen; her step-son Ryan Rhodes and his wife Christina of Chadburn, NC, and their children: Brayden and Carly; and one brother John Alexander Johnson, Jr. of Wilmington, NC.

A Celebration of Linda’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Centenary United Methodist Church 1501 Rivermont Avenue Lynchburg, VA, 24503 with the Rev. Doug Gonzales officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
