Lisa M. McDowell, 47, of Virginia Beach, formally of Roanoke, passed away suddenly on Saturday August 4, 2018.
She was born on June 8, 1971, in Lynchburg, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents Tom and Marianne McDowell; grandparents, Thomas and Polly McDowell and Phil and Marie Montano; and her favorite aunt, Michelle Dowdy.
Lisa graduated from Radford University and got her Master’s in Education from Lynchburg College. She was a well-known and well respected clinician and director in the mental health field. As a licensed counselor, she specialized in working with adolescents, families and those struggling with mental illness and substance abuse. She successfully managed outpatient programs, was instrumental in supervising those in training, and was an advocate in promoting counseling locally, regionally and on the state level.
Lisa had a warm and generous heart, always willing to help anyone in need and did it with a smile on her face. Her niece and nephew were the two biggest joys of her life. Her love of the ocean took her to Virginia Beach in 2016, where she enjoyed morning walks on the beach with her beloved dog, Nico and evening sunsets. She made many good friends over the years, some lifelong as Lisa never knew a stranger. Never without a warm smile and a kind gesture for everyone she met. Her light shone bright and that light will be truly missed by so many.
She is survived by her sister Amy Lightner and husband, Bryan; her two best little buddies, niece Madysen Lightner and nephew Blake Lightener, all of Lynchburg; uncle, Marty Montano; aunt, Marilyn Montano and uncle, John Dowdy all of Roanoke; aunt, Polly Waters and uncle Jerry Waters, of Downingtown Pa.; several cousins, Missy Cruz (Tom) of Ridgefield, Conn., Pat Waters (Lisa) of Downingtown Pa., Laurie Scigliano (Dave) of Gilbert, Ariz., Richard Bova, Danielle Eavenson (Webb), Josh Dowdy (Wesley), Justin Dowdy, and Jessica Dowdy all of Roanoke; great-cousins, Jordan Cruz, Ty Cruz, Micaiah and Caleb Eavenson, Briar and Shepard Dowdy, Ryan, Samantha and Brayden Waters, and Callie Scigliano. Also, her very special friend, T.C. Mowry, of Gloucester.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2018, in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg by Justin Dowdy.
