Lois Fay Umberger Whitehurst, 85, died on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at home.
She was born in Wytheville, Va. on December 3, 1932. She was preceded in death by her parents Harmon David Umberger and Ola Elizabeth Akers; a baby sister, Annie Maude Umberger; and her twin brother, Louis Ray Umberger.
She was a graduate of Wytheville High School, class of 1950, and of Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va., class of 1954.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, The Rev. William H. Whitehurst, Jr.; two sons, Stephen Tod Whitehurst and daughter-in-love, Angela, and two step grandsons, Berkeley and Jared of Vinton, Va., and the Rev. William Allen Whitehurst and daughter-in-love, Jill; two granddaughters, Christa Mary Whitehurst and husband, Jason, and Rebekah Fansler Whitehurst and wife, Kristy, and two step grandsons, Jacob Thompson and wife, Elizabeth, and Mark Thompson and wife, Stephanie; and nine great-grandchildren, all in Indiana. She is also survived by a sister Elizabeth Sue Coffey and husband, Donald Leon; two cousins of Wytheville; one nephew, David Lee Umberger of Greensboro, N. C.; and a sister-in-love, Mary A. Whitehurst Peris and husband, Anthony “Tony” Peris of Norfolk, Va.
She shared in the Christian ministry with her husband, Bill, for some 50 years all in Virginia. Shortly after moving to Lynchburg, she attended Bible Study and Prayer Group at Covenant Presbyterian Church and placed her membership at the Timberlake Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She enjoyed writing poetry for family, friends, and about her Christian faith.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Timberlake Christian Church with Pastor Bob Mooty officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial gifts may be made to Timberlake Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Lynchburg.
