Lonnie Lee Floyd, Jr.

Lonnie Lee Floyd Jr., 87, of Lynchburg, VA, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at his home. He was the husband of the late Helen Sue Templeton Floyd for 47 years and the late Thelma (Scotty) Floyd.

Born Sunday, July 08, 1923 in Lynchburg, Lonnie was a son of the late Lonnie Lee Floyd, Sr. and Naomi Ethel Pugh Floyd.

Lonnie is survived a son; Barry Wayne Floyd and his wife Brenda, of Tampa, FL, four daughters; Carol Floyd Hay of Lynchburg, Gail F. Smith and her husband Danny, of Forest, Brenda Floyd Tyree and her husband, Reginald of Lynchburg, and Deborah F. Scott and her husband, George, of Angier, NC, 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, a brother; Edward D. Floyd and his wife, Gladys, of Lynchburg, and a sister; Barbara Floyd Ross and her husband, George, of Madison Heights.

In addition to his wife\"™s and his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; Dorothy Floyd Merritt.

Lonnie was from the old school and affectingly known as \"hard rock\". He earned this name over his life time, he was a man of integrity and he was punctual, you could set your clock by him. Having grown up during the depression hard work is what he knew. He joined the U.S. Navy proudly serving on the U. S. S. Hocking as a seaman and then as gunner during WWII. After the war he went to work for Southern Rail Road and worked his way up from a brakeman to the yard master at both Monroe and Montview Station. In his private time he loved to hunt and fish, go to Lynn Haven Beach and collect things, especially guns and coins.

The family will receive friends from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, and at other times at his residence.   A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, May 2, 2011 in Fort Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Danny Smith officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16.
