Lorraine Mildred Judd

January 8, 1939 — June 18, 2024

Huddleston, Virginia

JUDD, Lorraine M. (nee Schilstra), of Huddleston, VA passed away on June 18, 2024 at the age of 85. Born in Paterson, New Jersey and formerly of Riverdale, New Jersey, she lived in Huddleston since 1990.

Lorraine married her former spouse, Louis Van Hoff, in 1958 and the couple moved to Riverdale, NJ shortly afterward, where they raised their two daughters.

She early on displayed her commitment to making the world a better place. As a Girl Scout leader, her Troop started a recycling program that was so successful that the town took over the responsibility for its continued operation. With that feather in their cap, the Troop was then responsible for the creation of Freedom Park, which has since been greatly expanded and enjoyed by many residents of the town.

She and her husband Raymond visited the Smith Mountain Lake area and purchased a home in the Valley Mills Crossing subdivision which served as their vacation home until Ray’s retirement, when they became full-time residents of the Lake. The two became active members of the community with Lorraine continuing her volunteerism after Ray’s death in 2017.

Lorraine volunteered at the National D-Day Memorial, as well as Bedford Ride as a driver taking those unable to drive to medical appointments, and was very active with Friends of SML State Park, continuing to support the summer “Ray Judd's Music in the Park” program named in honor of her late husband. A pilot and former aircraft owner, she served as “president for life” of the SML Pilots Club, an organization having over 80 members. She and her companion Charlie Walker remained the sole surviving charter members of the club which was founded in 1995. As the remaining original owner in her development, she was very supportive of maintenance duties for her property owners association, always available to assist her neighbors or anyone needing help in the Lake area.

Lorraine is survived by her daughters, Diane Van Hoff and her husband Paul Mortensen of Centennial, CO; and Linda Jaszyn and her husband Rick, of Whitehouse Station, NJ; her grandchildren, Jessica Reyes, and Matthew and Alex Jaszyn; step-daughter, LaVerne Aldrich and her daughter, Erica; sister, Wilma Bouse of Whiting, New Jersey; and brother, Robert Schilstra, of Scottsdale, AZ; numerous nieces and nephews; and her devoted companion Charlie Walker of Moneta, VA. She is predeceased by her husband, Raymond Judd, and sister, Evelyn Troost.

A celebration of her life service will be held at 11:00 at on Saturday June 29, 2024 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Moneta, with a reception following. Her ashes will be interred later on, along with those of her late husband at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of SML State Park (FSMLSP), 1235 State Park Road, Huddleston, VA 24104, or the National D-Day Memorial, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, VA 24523. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, is assisting the family.
