Louise Brannan (Davis) Hume

Louise Brannan (Davis) Hume passed from this life to the next on October 3, 2021. Louise was born on June 30, 1930, in Lynchburg, Va., to Louise Elizabeth (Armstrong) and Alonza Joshua Davis of Lynchburg, Va.
Louise grew up in Lynchburg, graduating from E. C. Glass High School in 1947. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va., where she received a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1951. After graduation, Louise taught in Appomattox and Charlottesville before she began teaching at the Lynchburg Training School and Hospital in Madison Heights. There she met fellow teacher Lyndelle Harold “Lindy” Hume of Monroe, whom she married in 1956.
Lindy and Louise built their own home in Monroe at night and on weekends while they taught full-time. After the birth of their children, Louise worked in the Amherst County Schools as a substitute and then full-time teacher. In the 1970s she earned an associates’ degree in computer science at Central Virginia Community College and went on to work in accounting for Fidelity National Bank and King’s Grocery Stores. After retirement, Louise used her computer skills to pursue her passion for genealogy. She was never so happy as when she found a new cousin, even if the connection was several times removed.
Louise was a talented maker in all crafts, but especially needle arts. She was a charter member of the Cardinal Lace Guild, and for decades she demonstrated lacemaking at events throughout Virginia and North Carolina. She even traveled to Scotland to share her techniques with other lacemakers. She was for many years a member of the Altar Guild at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and helped care for the altar linens until her final illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Lindy Hume; her brother, John Armstrong Davis Sr., of Charlotte, N.C.; and her nephew, John Armstrong Davis Jr., of Janesville, Wisc.
She is survived by her children, Jeffery Hume-Pratuch (Tom), of Lynchburg, and Edward D. Hume (Susan), of La Verne, Calif.; two grandchildren, Ed Hume Jr., of Miami, Fla., and Janet Hume-McGeoch (Andy) of Washington, D.C.; nieces Susan Davis Zils (Ron) of Overland Park, Kans., and Ruth Ann Hume Dover, of Easley, S.C.; nephews Robert D. Davis (Lisa) of Charlotte, N.C., Lee A. Davis of Church Creek, Md., and Robert L. Hume (Jan) of Naples, N.C.; Carol Sutton-Abaire (Archie) of Beaverdam, Howard A. Sutton (Barbie) of Lynchburg, and David T. Sutton of Rustburg; and countless cousins of every degree.
A Celebration of Louise’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 605 Clay St., Lynchburg, Va., with inurnment to follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the church one hour before the service.
