Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.) John “Jack” Alexander Martin, 92, of Moneta passed away at his home on Monday, November 20, 2017. He was born on June 20, 1925 in Mt. Vernon, NY. He was the son of the late Dr. James Joseph Martin and Marian Stone Martin. In addition to his parents Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley Timberlake Martin; a daughter, Mary Martin Kinney; a daughter-in-law, Delores Martin and a sister, Jane Frank.

Jack served his country in the United States Air Force having retired after 24 years of service during both the Korean conflict and Vietnam. He received numerous awards during his career including two Distinguished Flying Cross, eleven clusters of the air medal during both wars. Jack loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them on family vacations at the lake, holidays, and weekend visits. In 1978 Jack and his wife, Shirley moved to Smith Mountain Lake to enjoy many cherished moments. Jack was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time on the lake with his two fishing buddies Jim and Herb. Jack was a dedicated New York Yankees fan. He also enjoyed golfing, reading and traveling. Jack was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta.

He is survived by his four children, Cindy Martin, Jimmy Martin, Mike Martin and wife, Gwen and Pat Martin; two grandchildren, Sean Kinney and Dallas Hoegerl and her husband, Bryan; one great-grandchild, Gabriella Kinney; two nephews, Greg Frank and Bob Frank; one niece, Diane Frank also numerous other family and many friends.

A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Resurrection Catholic Church with Deacon Barry officiating.
