Lucy Smith Stewart, 85, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at her residence at Westminster Canterbury.
Lucy was born Dec. 22, 1929, in Manhasset, NY, to Lloyd Gaston Smith and Lucy Fairhall Smith. Most of her childhood years were spent in Aruba, where her father was manager of the Standard Oil refinery and a beloved leader in the Lago community. She came to Virginia to attend Roanoke College, where she received a BA in Education. She later received her Master’s in Education from Lynchburg College. Many will remember her years as a first grade teacher, and later a special education teacher, in Amherst County Schools. Lucy loved music and was very active in community groups such as the Fine Arts Center and the Jefferson Choral Society, as well as the choir at Rivermont Presbyterian Church. In her retirement years she enjoyed teaching a water aerobics class at the YMCA and many volunteer activities. Until her health began to decline, she continued to love, serve and care for others.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burton Stewart; her brothers, Ronald Fairhall Smith and Edmund Joseph Smith; and her sisters, Winnifred Smith Esselstyn and Sarah Smith Hutchinson. She is survived by her brother, Gerald Lloyd Smith of Cheyenne, WY, and her sister, Marjorie Smith Fincher of Ripon, CA.; her children, Mary Beth Pickett Drake (Peter) of Rockbridge County, VA, Robert Chisholm Pickett (Fran) of Satellite Beach, FL, Kathryn Pickett Tucker (Barry) of Elon, VA, and Allen Lloyd Pickett (Tracy) of Richmond, VA; stepchildren, Vernon Stewart (Fay) of Winston Salem, NC, and Stephanie Stewart of Lynchburg, VA; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will greatly miss Lucy, but rejoices that she is now free from her suffering and at home with her Lord. We are grateful to the staff of Westminster Canterbury and Centra Hospice for all the loving care that Lucy received.
