Luther Ray Okes, Sr.

Luther Ray Okes, Sr., 74, of Lynchburg, VA, died Saturday, October 22, 2011. He was the husband of Helen Lawson Okes for 34 years.

Born Saturday, March 06, 1937 in Ellison, VA, Luther was a son of the late Carl Owen Okes and Ruby Basham Okes.

In addition to his wife, Luther is survived by three sons; Luther Ray Okes, Jr., and his wife, Barbara, of Lynchburg, Douglas Lane Wilson, of Silver Springs, MD, and Roger Dale Wilson, Jr., of Lynchburg, a daughter; Sheila Marie Wilson, of Rustburg, a brother, Leslie Okes, of Blacksburg, VA, three sisters; Nancy Scott, of Lynchburg, Wilma Sheppard and her husband, Jack, of Dublin, VA, and Wilma Linkous, and her husband, Lonzie, of Dublin, VA, two sister in-laws; Phyllis Okes, Jacksonville, Fla., Rebecca Foley, of Hardy, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Luther was preceded in death by a brother; William Okes, a brother in-law; Franklin Scott, and a sister in-law; Francis Okes.

A graduate of Auburn High School, Luther was affectionately known as \"Mr. Nascar.\" He loved working in his garden and sharing the vegetables with his neighbors. He was an active person not only mowing his yard but the neighbors\"™ also. There wasn\"™t anything he wouldn\"™t do for his neighbors and family. Luther could take a piece of junk and make something beautiful out of it. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post 16, a member of Moose Lodge 715 and a member of the Woodmen of the World. Luther retired from Intermet, where he worked for 48 years as a machinist and mechanic.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A Funeral Service will follow at 7:30 in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home with Chaplain Wayne Lanham officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 26, 2011 in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, VA.
