Lyman Griffith Hailey, 89, of Lynchburg, died Friday, May 20, 2011, in Lynchburg.
Born March 17, 1922 in Fort Worth, TX, Lyman was the son of the late Reverend Virgil McKnight Hailey and Lois Griffith Hailey.
He is survived by Doris, his wife of 63 years, his daughter, Cheryl Jo Hailey, of Charlottesville; his son John Carter Hailey and his wife, Marcia, of Richmond; his son Joel Swartz Hailey and his partner, David Torres, of Lynchburg; his sister, Betty Jo Sandman, of Saluda; his sister in law, Beverly H. Hailey, of Lynchburg; and many nephews and nieces, and their spouses and children..
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Robert Carter Hailey and brother-n-law, Reverend Bill Sandman.
Mr. Hailey was a morse code radio operator in the FBI, U.S. Maritime Service and U.S. Army. During the early part of WWII he operated a clandestine FBI radio station in South America. After the war, he was an FBI agent for 12 years at the seat of government then transferred to the Office of Telecommunications Policy in the Executive Office of the President where, among other things, he served as a member of U.S. Delegations to numerous international telecommunications conferences. After 35 years he retired from the Federal Government and worked for 17 years as a radio electronic officer on U.S. Merchant ships.
Mr. Hailey was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as elder, deacon and for 12 years was a working member of the Property Care and Maintenance Committee.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 11th and Floyd Street, Lynchburg, on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. William B. Russell, and the Rev. Dr. Robert Wilson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Westminster Presbyterian Church, or Churches for Urban Ministry, both located at 1022 Floyd Street, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
