Bob passed away on January 27, 2016, at the Hospice House in Lynchburg after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Bob and his saintly wife, Sharlene, raised their family in Michigan City, Indiana, where he owned and ran a sporting goods store, appropriately named, “Bob’s Sporting Goods”. He and Shar retired to Crystal River, Florida in 1980, living on a beautiful rural parcel in a house that they had designed. He volunteered with the local sheriff’s patrol, and loved to travel.
Bob is survived by his son, Ken Rubin and his wife, Linda of Houghton, Michigan; and his daughter, Francy Rubin (who dragged Bob kicking and screaming to Lynchburg when he could no longer drive) and her husband, Tom Brown of Lynchburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Centra Hospice and at the Hospice House for their love and caring support during this time. His many friends at Valley View Retirement Community made his adjustment to Lynchburg possible; without your warm welcome and willingness to listen to all of his teases, he would have been miserable, so for that we are forever grateful. Dr. Peter Gibbs was the best doctor ever, providing the most caring and compassionate care for Bob’s “spipsisspadadis”!
Bob will be buried next to his wife in Michigan City. Those wishing to make contributions in honor of Bob should consider The Lynchburg Humane Society, 1211 Old Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
