Mack Lee Arrington, 84, of Bedford breathed his last breath in this world and passed peacefully into Heaven on Wednesday, February 1, at Oakwood Manor. Known as “Mackie” to his close family and friends, he lived a simple, humble life and is much remembered for his frugality. He saved every penny
Mack was a renowned Bedford County dairy farmer and second generation owner of Twin Oaks Dairy. He was known for his integrity, honesty, and hard work ethic; to be in his presence exuded respect. He was a man of few words, but when he had something to say, it was important.
Born September 3, 1932, in Bluefield, WVA, he was the only child of the late Ted Lee Arrington and Mary Helen Shufflebarger Arrington (Johnson).
Mack is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 66 years, Helen Marie Key Arrington. She worked beside him on the farm and in the fields while, together, they parented four children who also survive: Kathy Arrington Glover and husband, Rich; Mark Lee Arrington and wife, Penny; Melinda Arrington Cooper and husband, Gary; and Renae Arrington Fariss and husband, Ron. He was Grandpa to eight grandchildren who survive: Melinda Glover Misjuns; Megan Glover Zawadzki; Richard Glover, Jr.; Clark Lee Glover; Callie Marie Glover; Ted Lee Arrington; Lucas Lee Arrington, and Hannah Leigh Arrington. He was Great Grandpa to four surviving great-grandchildren: Blake and Brody Brubaker, Max Misjuns, and Madilyn Arrington.
Mack was a life-long member of Suck Spring Baptist Church where he served many years as a deacon and trustee. He faithfully attended Sunday School and Worship services with his wife and children, and his Christian example influenced them one by one to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
During his later years, Mack endured several medical conditions, the last of which was a stroke, leaving him confined to bed for the past several months. Even though he couldn’t move around as he would have liked, his mind was as sharp as ever, and he knew his family and the people who cared for him at Oakwood Manor. Never complaining, he was able to communicate his needs and wants up until his last day in this world.
His family is grateful to the many doctors, nurses, and therapists at Lynchburg General and Centra Bedford Hospitals and Oakwood Manor who compassionately cared for Mack. He had a profound respect for Brian Buchanan, MD, his physician for many years.
A simple graveside service at Suck Spring Baptist Church cemetery was Mack’s last request. It will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, with Pastor Michael Cox officiating.
