Macon Ezra Burford
Macon Ezra Burford, 92, of Goode, has gone to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 5, 2011. Born on September 26, 1918, he was the son of the late Esther Abbott Burford and Ezra Fleming Burford. In addition to his parents, Macon was preceded in death by his brothers, Clyde, Rucker, and Landon Burford; and grandson-in-law, Rodney W. Weeks, Sr.
Macon was devoted to his wife of 70 years, Elsie Lee Williams. They were avid campers and loved to take bus trips all over the country. He has been a member of Oakland United Methodist Church since he was a child. He worked at the Hosiery Mill in Lynchburg for 32 years and retired from Barker Jennings in 1984.
Macon is survived by his daughter, Sandra Collins; grandchildren, Lisa Arthur and husband, Richard, Wayne Collins and wife, Jennifer, Linda W. Phelps and husband, Beryle, Josh Collins and wife, Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Rodney Weeks, Jr., Michael Arthur, and Matthew Arthur, all of Bedford County; sisters, Kathleen Hawkins of Lynchburg, Juanita Campbell of Bedford County, and Norma Hawkins of Goode; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford on Monday, August 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. H. O. \"Tom\" Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 16. Memorial contributions may be made to the Goode Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 178, Goode, VA 24556 or the Bedford Rescue Squad, 311 Bedford Ave., Bedford, VA 24523.
