Mae Tibbs Mccarron

Mae Tibbs McCarron, age 92, a long-time resident of Lynchburg, Va., died February 14, 2019, at her daughter’s home in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Mae passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving daughters and family.  In addition to her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 32 years, Elmore McCarron, and seven siblings.

Born April 30, 1926 in Red House, Va., to Bernard Tibbs and Nolie Joy Tibbs, Mae was the youngest of 8 children.  She attended Naruna High School, where she was valedictorian and Captain of the volleyball team. She was a graduate of Virginia Commercial College.  Mae worked for 27 years as a bookkeeper at Adams Motor Co. before becoming the Director of the Busy Bee Child Care Center.  She later served as the Office Manager at Virginia Adhesives.

Mae married Elmore McCarron in 1953 and raised their daughters Lillian and Judy in Lynchburg.  She was a dedicated wife and mother who with Elmore taught her daughters the virtues of compassion and caring, honesty, respect, and true grace.  She selflessly provided for her family while working full-time, and was never one to complain.  Her work ethic was unmatched.  Together with her family, Mae enjoyed camping, games, and watching movies. 

Mae loved socializing with neighbors and friends, playing cards, sewing, cooking meals, and trips to the beach.  She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for more than 60 years, where she held numerous positions, including Chapter President..  She also was a dedicated member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, where she served with a number of groups and committees.  Mae was known as a joyous person, always welcoming and engaging.  Behind her gentile southern charm lurked a quick wit capable of producing sarcastic and funny, yet always loving, jokes.  

Perhaps one of her favorite activities later in life, and one in which she surely excelled, was spoiling her grandchildren.  She enjoyed hosting her grandchildren at “Granny Camp” in Lynchburg and vacationing with them whenever she could. Mae was particularly known for cooking a feast of ham and green beans, with homemade rolls.  And with Granny, there always was dessert, followed by a card game or two.  An athlete in high school, Mae enjoyed bowling and miniature golf with her grandchildren, and she was a formidable competitor. 

Mae is survived by her daughters Lillian McCarron and Judy Weinsheimer (Brad); her grandchildren, John Elmore, Sean, and Christopher Schuttler, and Katie and Matthew Weinsheimer; her canine best friend Sampson, and numerous nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 22, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive., Lynchburg, Va.  A funeral service and celebration of Mae’s life will be held at 11 a.m., February 23, 2019 at Fort Hill United Methodist Church, 106 Oakridge Blvd., Lynchburg, Va., with burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 710 Clay St., Lynchburg, Va.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fort Hill United Methodist Church or Montgomery Hospice.
