Manly Monroe Marshall, Jr, 92, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014. He was the husband of the late Ola Jean McGowen Marshall for 58 years.
Born February 15, 1922, in Naruna, VA, he was one of ten children born to the late Manly and Olive Marshall.
A beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Manly was an active member of Heritage United Methodist Church. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. Being driven to work hard, he retired as an accountant from the U.S. Postal Service as well as an x-ray technician from Lynchburg General Hospital. In his free time he loved gardening and had the most beautiful yard on the street. He grew every kind of vegetable and fruit and enjoyed sharing them with family and neighbors.
In addition to his children, Dr. Manly Ernest Marshall and his wife Lisa of Lynchburg and Mrs. Rebecca Yaffe and her husband Ben of Forest, Mr. Marshall is survived by one brother, George Herbert Marshall and six grandchildren: Shannon Abatecola, Paul Yaffe, Jenny Bortz, Manly E. Marshall, II, Erin Berenz, and Catherine Miller; seven great-grandchildren: Emma, Brennan, Jack and Owen Bortz, Ben Abatecola, Annabelle Yaffe and William Berenz.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by six sisters: Carolyn, Catherine, Ruth, Ruby, Josephine and Velma and two brothers: William and Carol.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Naruna, with the Rev. Will Montgomery officiating.
