Margaret Brooks Burruss

Margaret \"Peggy\" Brooks Burruss died September 28, 2011.  Born in Lynchburg, April 17, 1923 and was the daughter of Benjamin Lee Brooks, DDS and Grace Showalter Brooks.  She was the wife of the late State Senator Robert Sidney Burruss, Jr. At her death she was a resident of Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg.

Mrs. Burruss was educated in the Lynchburg Public Schools and a graduate of Madison College (James Madison University).  She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Art Editor of the yearbook, and Vice President of her Senior Class.

Upon graduation from college she worked as a commercial artist for Morton Manufacturing designing for ads, catalogues, and mailings.

After her marriage, she became a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where she served at all levels of the United Methodist Women as well as serving at the District Level with college students.  She taught Church School for 30 years.

Mrs. Burruss was very interested in the visual arts.  She was a member of the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, the Lynchburg Art Club, and the Virginia Watercolor Society.  She was a touring Docent at Randolph-Macon Woman\"™s College Maier Museum of American Art.   Peggy was also a local artist known for her portrait paintings, florals, figurative work, landscapes and Garden Day boxes

Mrs. Burruss supported her husband\"™s efforts to build a two-party system in Virginia.  Bob Burruss served as a Republican Senator of the 23rd District.

She is survived by four children, Rebecca Satterfield (Becky) and her husband, Charles C. Satterfield III of Richmond, James Robert Burruss and his wife, Valerie, Hanna Brooks Burruss and her husband, Hugh Whaley, and Mary Ping Bailey and her husband David A. Bailey of Lynchburg; and seven wonderful grandchildren, Molly Brooks Ping, David Linville. Ping, Sarah J. Ping, Michael J. Satterfield, Jamie B. Satterfield, James Scott Burruss, Meredith C. Burruss, and a step grandson, Jonathan Jacob Whaley and his wife, Trish.  She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Robert L. Harrison (Helen) and her husband, Bob, of Buchanan Dam, Texas. 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Burruss will be held at 12 noon Saturday October 1, 2011 in The Commons at Westminster-Canterbury with Dr. A.J. Edwin Clever officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Hume Room. Interment will be held privately at Spring Hill Cemetery.
