Margaret E. Hutchins

Margaret E. Hutchins,100, passed away on May 20 after a short illness.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Carolyn, and son in law, Ed Polloway, of Lynchburg, her son, Rob, of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, her granddaughter, Lyndsay Polloway (Vince Voci), of Washington DC and by five nephews and nieces in England. She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Elsie Moore, her brother, David and her sister, Jean.
Margaret was born in Shanghai, China on November 11, 1920, where her father was working for the British American Tobacco Company. She spent her childhood in Shanghai, attended boarding school in England, went to finishing school in Switzerland, and then returned to Shanghai.
She and her family ended up leaving Shanghai because of the Japanese invasion of China and moved to Southern California to stay with relatives. Subsequently, she was returning with her family to England on the SS Jagersfontein. On June 26, 1942, the boat was torpedoed by the Germans off Bermuda and sank. After leaving the sinking ship in a lifeboat, Margaret was rescued at sea a day later by a Swiss ship and went on to Gibraltar before returning to England. The lifeboat occasioned her meeting with her future husband, Stuart Hutchins, a member of the US Army who had also been on the Jagersfontein.
After meeting again in London, they were married in 1943. Margaret arrived in New York right after the end of World War II on the first ship of war brides. She lived in Queens and then moved to Huntington, Long Island.
In 1979 Margaret moved to Grapevine, Texas. Her world travels continued during this time with numerous trips taking her to six continents, traveling with her many friends and her special friend for many years, Roger Cox. Then, in 2015, she moved to Lynchburg and has resided since that time at Westminster Canterbury. In addition to traveling, Margaret enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, cooking, and reading.
Our family appreciates the tremendous support provided to Margaret by the staff at Westminster Canterbury, particularly during the year of the pandemic and in her final weeks of life.
A private memorial service is planned. Individuals wishing to make a gift in Margaret’s memory might want to consider Virginia Episcopal School or the SPCA of Lynchburg.
