Margaret Ruth Long Hager

Margaret Long Hager, a long-time member of the Smith Mountain Lake community, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024, at the age of 74. She is preceded in death by her parents, The Rev. James Long Sr. and Grace Long, sister Roberta Campbell, and brother The Rev. Robert Long. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Phillip Hager, and one brother, James Long Jr. of Missouri. She leaves behind two stepchildren, Gretchen Hager Tipps (Ryan) of Vinton and Gavin Hager (Rose) of Smith Mountain Lake, as well as four grandchildren, Everett and Josephine Tipps and Emma and Anson Hager.

Margaret, a graduate of Lynchburg College with a degree in business, contributed significantly to the early success of the Phil Hager

Insurance Agency before retiring in 2016. Her dedication to the agency played a vital role in its growth, leaving a lasting impact on the

community. Margaret found solace in the pages of mystery books; adventure in her many travels; the simple joys of gardening; and sought contentment in viewing the lake from her deck.

A private family service will be held to honor Margaret’s memory, and a community Celebration of Life service will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Margaret requested donations be made to the SML Lions Scholarship Trust at P.O. Box 655 Hardy, VA 24101 or to your favorite charity.
