Margaret (Maggie) Elizabeth Hansen Litz

d. January 20, 2021

Margaret (Maggie) Elizabeth Litz (Hansen), age 59, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed peacefully in her home surrounded by family, friends, and her beloved dog, Peanut, on January 20th, 2021.

Maggie spent the past 10 months fighting metastatic lung cancer with her family by her side.  Maggie was born in Gloversville, New York to Marion Jeannette and Charles Angar Hansen and was the oldest of three siblings, Karl Hansen (wife; Susan Hansen, children; Bryan, Gregory, & Mallory Hansen) and Cheryl Kohinke (children; Ashley & Kyle Kohinke).  She was married to Robert (Bob) Allen Litz in May 1983 and had two daughters, Christina Hayes (children; Zoey & Charlie Hayes) and Melinda Mathews (husband; Daniel Mathews).

As a natural caregiver, Maggie followed her passion and became a registered nurse in 1982. She worked as a nurse for 38 years, starting her career at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, NY and later moving to Lynchburg General.  She spent most of her career in the operating room but also spent time as a home health, intensive care, and inpatient rehab nurse.

Prior to her diagnosis, Maggie loved to spend time with her family. She was over-the-moon when she & Bob became grandparents to Zoey and Charlie. She loved spending summers in the pool with her friends, kids and grandkids. Maggie spent months, each year, scheming with her brother, sister, and daughters to plan family trips which have grown each year, along with the family size. Maggie loved this tradition, which will live on with her family, and will continue to grow, just as Maggie would want it to.

A memorial will be held at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg, VA on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 4 p.m. with a visitation prior from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. http://giftfunds.stjude.org/MaggieLitz
